How to fuel up your engines: nutrition in handball
At all level of sport the correct choice of what and when to eat and drink are essential during training and competition. Effective sports nutrition can increase the level of performance, improve body composition, support efficient recovery and prevent injury. One of the determining aspects in sports performance is the recovery from fatigue after exercise. Athletes who recover faster from fatigue will have an advantage for their subsequent training or competition.
With a focus on handball, experts at the University of Alicante explored the energy requirements of a game of handball and how players should fuel for a match and for daily training. In the manual “Food and nutrition in handball” Länk till annan webbplats.produced together with the EHF they explain nutrients required, including protein, carbohydrate, and fat, and suggest possible meal options which can supply these. The manual distinguishes between requirements for male and female athletes and also outlines key intolerances, and foods which should be avoided if athletes are suffering from these.
Co-author Alejandro Martinez said the manual could help players understand the fundamentals of a healthy diet and understand the impact of food selection and intake around training or matches, as well as what nutrition and supplements can help increase energy and performance for handball players.
